Broadcom joins the Linux Foundation
Broadcom has become the newest member of the Linux Foundation. In September 2010, Broadcom released its brcm80211 wireless driver for Linux, suitable for the BCM4313, BCM43224 and BCM43225 802.11n wireless chips, under a GPL2-compatible license. Broadcom also says that it plans to continue working with the Linux Driver Project, which is aimed at creating and maintaining open source Linux kernel drivers for a variety of devices.
VIA’s Open Linux Graphics Driver Has Been Defenestrated
For those that were hoping that VIA Technologies would pull through in providing their open-source graphics driver support like they had promised with kernel mode-setting, a Gallium3D driver, and being Linux friendly, kiss those thoughts goodbye as they’ve been basically thrown out the window. Sadly, it’s not happening. I had a very productive conversation with VIA’s Stewart Haston, who is their international marketing specialist, and their Linux outlook is extremely dark.
The kernel column #96 with Jon Masters – 2010 in review
2010 was another exciting year for the Linux kernel and its community. Over the course of four kernel releases and many tens of thousands of mailing list messages, over one thousand individual developers (some working alone, some working for corporations) contributed two new architectures, several new file systems, and drivers for key hardware in the form of the Nouveau Nvidia driver (produced independently of Nvidia) and an open source Broadcom driver for its recent Wi-Fi chips. Of course, many more features were added, too…

2011: The year open source goes (really) capitalist
If 2010 was the year that taught open source "how to disappear completely," 2011 will be the year we’re reminded that "anyone can play guitar"…or open source. At present, open source is de rigueur with the underdog class, those vendors seeking to challenge incumbents like Apple and Oracle.

This time I won’t be sitting at home in front of bookshelves, but I’ll be at Büro2.0, Berlin’s fantastic Open Source coworking place. I’ve been working from there for about a year now and I love it. Lots of fantastic people there, all working with Open Source things.
In addition to Büro2.0 awesomeness, I’ll be joined by my Berliner colleagues from Canonical, not only heroes but also awesome friends. It should be a lot of fun, so make sure you tune in.
